Hi gang, New to the area and looking for a place locally to collect critters. Be it in Fort Myers or Naples. Just looking for snails and peppermint shrimp. I know they are cheap at the store. It is something that my son and I do as a father son thing. We used to collect over in the miami/lauderdale area, but don't want to drive that far. Thanks

No peppermints here unless
Submitted by jdhuyvetter on Mon, 2008-04-28 09:40.No peppermints here unless you go way offshore. You can find Nassarius snails at low tide at Bunche Beach. I used to collect pistol shrimp at low tide on the first island over the bridge heading towards Sanibel. Due to construction, I haven't been in over a year. The grass flats along the islands going towards Sanibel always produce a few critters. I've used a fine net to collect mysis shrimp, grass shrimp and pipe fish. You might even snag the occasional wrasse or seahorse on the grass flats too.
Keep in mind, no collecting of live critters on Sanibel proper!!
I've heard that there is stuff down around Marco, but I've never looked.

Tim there is probably not as
Submitted by Aquaman on Mon, 2008-04-28 19:14.Tim there is probably not as much to collect here as there is on the east coast. I like to take my son collecting also, it is one of the main reasons we started our tank. I am curious what environment you found peppermint shrimp in? I think they would be fun to collect.

environments for peppermints
Submitted by Timothy McCandless on Tue, 2008-04-29 06:46.environments for peppermints varied. several places near the bridges on the east coast you could always come up with peppermints. Just turn up the rocks and chase the little buggers down. They were often near the jetties too, always by the rocks. never found any in the seagrass.
