Hey guys, I think my Chiller is injured or dieing! If you don't already know I have a 90 reef with 75 sump. I'm circulating approx. 135 gals in my system. I have a Prime Chiller1/10 hp made by Current USA. I know it's rated for 75-80 gal systems. I bought it when I only had 90 and was told it would be fine since I only run 520 watts PC lighting. This was 2 years ago.

Last night the chiller started to scream whenever it would kick on. It almost sounds like a bearing going bad. Not sure if these things have bearings or not. So, I unplugged it along with 1 of 2 skimmers, 1 of 2 UV steralizers and any other unecessary device. Box fans running to keep temp down.

I need any input you guys can give me. Can this be serviced? is it like a refridgeerator? Can it be taken to a repair shop? Any one experience such a thing??? Any advice will be helpful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it sounds like you're

If it sounds like you're shaking a tin can with pennies bouncing in it ... it's done. ... the compressors in them are pretty expensive to replace. I looked into it for my old 1/2HP ... and all of the A/C companies wanted nearly as much for the new copeland compressor as I could buy a new chiller for ...

**EDIT** ... this was based on the 1/2 HP I had at one time ... By the time I paid for the service call, and paid to have the unit recharged .. i could've just bought a new one ... Sad

It sounds to me like the fan

It sounds to me like the fan motor is going bad. I'd say its pretty common for a undersized chiller to have this problem at about two years because i'm sure it runs more frequently than it normally would. Not sure what they run but i had to replace two on the chillers i had at the store when it was at the old location and we had no A/C out back. Its a pretty easy fix and if your pretty good with hand tools and common sense you can most likely fix it yourself. It shouldn't be more than a $100 for a new fan motor. Hope this helps.

Thanks to ALL that replied.

Thanks to ALL that replied. I took it apart and gave the fan shaft/motor a shot of WD40 and now it's purring like a kitten.

I guess It wouldn't be a bad idea to give it a shot maybe once a month to keep it from drying out again.

Thanks again,

Steve

Glad thats all it was .. as

Glad thats all it was .. as far as WD40 ... I have something MUCH better ...

Go & locate a bottle of WURTH HHS2000 ... this stuff is the cats paw. It's a liquid spray that sets into a high temp grease ... it'll run into all the cracks & crevices, and about 5-15 seconds later it will set & quit running.
That is the ONLY thing i'll use to grease something ... this will hold up... very well and for quiet a while.

here is a link to a bottle on ebay:

Steve,

no problem. I purchased my bottle on ebay about ... 5-6 years ago. I'm still on the same bottle, even though this one is nearing the end. This stuff really is great. Never need alot of it, one quick spray & it runs into all the cracks ... lasts a LONG time.
